Tesla’s simple ambition is to make it the fastest car in the world. The acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (96 km / h) is in 1.9 seconds, what to expect a 0 to 100 km / h in 2 seconds . And the bar of 100 mph (160 km / h) is crossed in 4.2 seconds. As for the quarter-mile (400 m), standard meter of automotive performance across the Atlantic, it is covered in just 8.8 seconds. The records of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon at 2.3 seconds, 5.1 seconds and 9.65 seconds respectively are beaten.
If we waited for Tesla on the ground of acceleration, its ability to shine with an impressive top speed was far less secure. Still, Elon Musk announces 250 mph, or 400 km / h ! What tickle the Bugatti Chiron and Koenigsegg Regera . It remains to know the real endurance performance of this new Tesla Roadster. So far indeed, the cars of the Californian brand, even in their most powerful versions, can only use their full capacity for a few tens of seconds. We have shown it in our tests of Model S and Model X. Beyond that, the battery lowers its performance so as not to deteriorate, to the point that it is for example impossible to complete a tour of the Nurbürgring. Let’s hope the Roadster remedies this problem.
If we ignore for the moment all the endurance of batteries, their capacity is twice that of the most powerful Model S, with 200 kWh . What to ensure according to the manufacturer autonomy of nearly 1,000 km in actual use . Again, it’s a record. Still, these batteries will have an influence on the weight of the car. The platform, certainly taken from the Model S, will not be as light as that of the Elise. It’s a safe bet that the car will happily exceed two tons. To see if agility is at the rendezvous.
Tesla Model X 100 D: as versatile as a hybridSince its launch a little less than a year ago, the Tesla Model X is undoubtedly the most spectacular electric car on the market . On the one hand because of its size: it measures 2.07 m wide (mirrors folded) for 5.03 m long. That puts it directly in front of the biggest SUV on the market, the Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Volvo XC90. Another cause for astonishment: its many extravagant details, starting with its “Falcon Wings” rear doors, which are deployed upwards, much faster than at launch thanks to a software update. Tap a menu on the screen, close all the doors and press the key lock button (car-shaped) and the craft even starts a sound and light show where the doors flap like wings. What to tape all the onlookers!
If all this still has its effect as the launch, the big news is the battery of our test copy. Grosse is not a euphemism, since it weighs no less than 600 kg and can store 100 kWh of energy . This makes it the most consistent automotive market, with autonomy announced on the NEDC cycle of 565 km. In reality, the numbers are obviously less flattering: on average, we have been able to rely on a fully charged battery 345 km , with a useful capacity of the battery of 98 kWh. It’s little more than the 310 km we measured two years ago with a Model S P85D, more powerful and battery smaller. The fault lies with thehigh consumption of this SUV , superior to that of the sedan from which it derives. In question: aerodynamics. If both share an excellent drag coefficient of 0.24, the front surface of the Model X has nothing to do. Its SCx is therefore 0.62 m², against 0.50 m² for the Model S.
The Tesla Model X consumes more than the Model S
On average, we found a consumption of 28.4 kWh / 100 km , on a route with a large share of motorway, compared to 24.5 kWh / 100 km of the Model SP 85 D, which did not have the latest software updates to improve energy efficiency. On the motorway, consumption varied between 27.8 kWh / 100 km and 31.7 kWh / 100 km. If this gap seems inexplicable at first glance, given that we always drove at the legal speed with fairly smooth traffic, it is explained by a particularity of the Model X. Its huge windshield glazed , without a velum, quickly made transform the cabin greenhouse at the slightest ray of sunshine. As a result, air conditioning increases fuel consumption depending on the amount of sunshine in your route, which will therefore vary in length from 310 to 350 km. On the road, fuel consumption varied between 23.8 kWh / 100 km and 36.0 kWh / 100 km depending on the driving style. Either a range of 270 km to 410 km.
What is true with a petrol car is even more so with an electric car: if you want to go far, better not to press too hard on the accelerator. However, it sometimes seems difficult to restrain with the Model X 100 D. If the accelerations are not as light as those of the P 100 D, the 422 ch all meet . You can get out of the toll or double in the blink of an eye. Remains that beyond 180 km / h, the breath begins to run out. It seems all the more illusory to want to reach the advertised top speed of 250 km / h that power drops after a few tens of seconds, foot to the floor: then we only have about 150 hp. But this fall is noticeable only on long straight freeways. What may seem embarrassing on the P 100 D, designed to compete with the kings of the Autobahn that are Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and BMW X5 M seems here accessory. The Model X 100 D is able to offer very interesting boosting capabilities, and even maintain a steady pace on winding roads for several tens of kilometers. This is the main thing!
